Dionysus was the son of Zeus and the mortal woman Semele. When Semele asked to see Zeus in his divine form, she was consumed by his lightning. He traveled the world spreading the cultivation of grapes and the art of winemaking, accompanied by his followers, the satyrs and maenads.
